TFT Phobia Therapy with Paul McKenna in The Sun
TFT became famous for phobia therapy with the case of Mary who was freed of a persistent water phobia. She had this phobia for four years with little headway made with traditional methods. Roger Callahan, Mary’s psychotherapist, had learnt about the acupuncture meridians. He asked her where she felt the fear in her body and she said it was in her stomach. With the knowledge that the stomach meridian could be reached by the points on the cheecks, Dr Callaghan asked mary to stimulate her cheek points by tapping on them with her fingers. Then she said “it’s gone”. That was the phobia.
Along came Gary Craig who simplified TFT. Hence the birth of its versatile, highly robust child called EFT. Which is why it is so popular!
Thank you Paul McKenna and The Sun for publicising TFT. So many people are suffering unnecessarily with fears and phobias. Most phobias disappear pretty quickly (my fastest client was 5-10 minutes for a bird phobia). Some phobias feel like a phobia but are a kind of marker that says “help me” and stays there until a deeper issue has been addressed. The apparent phobic believes that they have a simple phobia but the phobia is simply a waving hand in a sea of emotions this person is unwittingly drowning in. No problem - the whole sea of negative emotions can also disappear with EFT (or TFT). It just takes a bit longer than for usual phobias, and that’s OK too. The most exciting thing about TFT and EFT is that the results seem to hold for good as long as all the aspects of the phobia have been removed. Another really exciting thing is that the fear can totally completely and absolutely go. The only fear that people keep is normal protective fears such as not putting one’s hand in the fire. Irrational fears can totally disappear. It is not a matter of “dealing with it”, “being strong”, or “feeling better about it”. It can actually completely go away and never be felt again. Of course, if your preference was to only feel better about a phobia, that can be arranged too. You don’t have to totally lose the phobia unless you choose to. You are totally in control with this and go at your own pace.
EFT is short for Emotional Freedom Techniques. It involves acupressure on special points that relieve negative emotions gently coaxed to the surface for healing. EFT is one of the gentlest ways of being permanently free from any emotional issue, including phobias. Initially, most clients that are new to EFT are skeptical and afraid. Afraid they will be forced to face their fears, that it is “a New Age” therapy (well, it is, but unfortunately so are many dubious quack cures, and some healthy skepticism is good for you anyway), or that just like the hypnosis they had which didn’t work, EFT was not going to work either. Then they are pleasantly surprised. Some are afraid of looking silly. But which do you think looks sillier, screaming atop a chair when confronted by a mouse (like I used to) or tapping on your face and hand?
EFT feels so gentle sometimes, it seems too simple. And that’s because we know how to make it so! Every therapist at our City clinic also does EFT. So do you want to have TFT or EFT? Why wait? Do something about it now, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t do it earlier!
